Lola’s Preggers!

A few months ago, we gave you our first “dog tale” with a little write-up on Lola, the Great Dane (http://bit.ly/anI53F). Well, here’s an update. She’s expecting!  Dr. C. of Intown Animal Hospital did an ultrasound today and wrote on his report, “Lola has multiple active ‘puppies’ noted on her abdominal ultrasound.”  What he didn’t write, but later called to say, was that it looks like our girl is carrying a big litter…maybe 8-12 pups. (OMG–12 Dane babies?)  We’ll be taking her back for an X-ray in three weeks to find out exactly how many are in there because I know Mike will want a “head count.”

More Dog Tales

Now, for more on the animals…

Ellie came into our lives two years ago when Arielle was a high school senior. Our daughter convinced us (well, convinced me) that she would not live through her senior year without a Yorkie. So, being the protective mom that I am, we found a small litter in the paper on a rainy Sunday morning. Arielle and I jumped in the car and drove to Austell, stopping by the ATM along the way to clean out our checking accounts. And all the while Mike kept yelling things like, “Absolutely not!” “We are NOT getting another dog.” “How much does that dog cost?” “I don’t want an indoor dog.” “You better not get that dog!” Fast forward about two hours and Arielle and I pulled up the driveway with our new pup “Ellie,” weighing all of about a half a pound. We’re all jumping up and down in the kitchen giddy with excitement and Mike’s locked himself in the study with his computer and won’t come out. In fact, Dad didn’t speak to us all day and all night. The next day the kids headed to school, I went to the office, and there’s Mike and Ellie alone–all day. I don’t know what happened, but when we got home she was still alive. Mike didn’t acknowledge her that evening and for about two days more, but somewhere along the line that little pup wormed her way into his heart and now they are BFF. Oh and by the way, Arielle survived her senior year at Grady. She went on to UGA and left Ellie behind to live with us. And now none of us can imagine life without her.

P.S. Lil’ Miss Ellie gets on just fine with the Danes. But when we’re at the farm she mostly stays indoors. We’ve already seen a few coyotes and, well, surely you heard about Jessica Simpson’s poor little Daisy…

Barks & Belly Scratches

Mike got a visit from a neighbor this week while working on a fence. “Sissy” from across the way stopped by to say hello. Actually, we met Sissy last year on our second visit to the farm…right before bought it. We were checking out the upper pasture when this crazy dog started barking furiously from across the road, then ran toward us at breakneck speed. Well, I tucked tail and starting running, too–AWAY from the potentially mad, rabid dog. But Mike stood his ground (as Mike usually does) and when Sissy reached him and Adrian, she dropped and rolled onto her back for a belly scratch.

Meet Lola

Thus far we haven’t talked much about our animals. We have a few, and they’re of course a big part of the family. Now that we have a few extra acres, my hunch is we’ll be adding more over the next few years. While I can still count them, we’ll try to introduce you to all our four-legged family members. Let’s start with Lola. She was my 43rd birthday present, a big surprise. We already had one Great Dane at the time, Lucy, who took up plenty of space. Then along came Lola. Lucy passed away a year ago and now Lola is top dog. She’s the sweetest, most loving thing, except for one little flaw: when you walk her she attacks other dogs. And at 135 lbs, if she wants a piece of another dog, believe me, holding her back ain’t easy. This spring we hope to breed Lola and have a litter of pups. Maybe that will calm her down. And I’m quite sure that after one litter of Danes Mike will put an end to our breeding business. So friends, if you want an adorable puppy (and have a little extra room) get those orders in early.
