‘newgrass’

One of the funnest things about having teenagers is how they keep you cool — and keep you young (despite the gray hairs and wrinkles that point to the contrary). Adrian and his buds have a growing diversity in their music tastes and this band, Trampled by Turtles, has been cranked up during a couple of recent road trips. Rooted in bluegrass, the quintet draws from indie, folk, rock, punk and country; some call their music “newgrass.” Trampled by Turtles is performing at major music festivals and venues all across the country this summer.

Here’s “Alone” from their newest work, Stars and Satellites — recorded in a log home outside Duluth, Minnesota, and performed live on NPR.

And if you’ve never listened to “Wait So Long,” do; it’ll make your heart race with pleasure.

Last weekend, watching Adrian and a pal work on trails, fill in big holes, and do some serious sweating overall, got me thinking about canteens — specifically, that the boys really needed one. Not because they’ll actually drink out of it, of course, but because they’re just so cool. For your own canteen memories (and sweaty kids, too), here are some ideas.

Vintage Palco aluminum canteen, eBay

Gorgeous glass canteens; use them as vases, One Kings Lane

Too fun western canteens, Black Forest Decor
