Happy Birthday, Claudia P.

Today, Claudia Pezzino would have been 25 years old.  She graced our lives for 18 years and, oh, how lucky we all were to be her friend.  Our thoughts are with her parents, Pauline and John, and in Claudia’s honor, we wanted to share a piece I wrote soon after her passing.  Happy birthday, dear Claudia.

This Rider’s Life
Claudia Pezzino, 18, has slipped away from us – succumbing to a six-month battle with leukemia.  She fought the disease as she lived…with grace, courage, a sense of humor and peace.
I met Claudia when she was all of 11 years old. I was 33, had just had my second child, and was trying to start my life with horses again. Anxious and unsure of myself, this captivating child took me in her care, showing me the ropes around the barn and the horses, so proud to teach me all she knew. This was the beginning of our friendship.
I remember some weeks later coming to the barn on a beautiful sunny day and looking down over the hill only to see “little Claudia” in the ring astride a beautiful dapple grey Holsteiner gelding she named “Shimmer.” He was her first horse. And she beamed with pride.
We spent several years together after that, riding, showing, talking about life, the horses and this sport we loved. Claudia’s wisdom belied her age, as I learned as much from this spiritual, soulful girl as any adult.  Despite a 22-year age difference, she had become a good friend – around which horses formed a framework.
Claudia worked hard for the privilege to ride, taking care of other people’s horses, schooling them, grooming them, setting up at shows, and helping her trainer any way she could to offset the cost of lessons. Her parents, Pauline and John, made many sacrifices to enable her to pursue her dream. She was a talented children’s hunter rider, choosing from an early age a life with horses. Her ultimate goal was to become a trainer. She was, at 18, already a horseman. I think in some way we riders have all suffered a loss with her passing because Claudia would have been an exceptional, kind and wise teacher.
Today, I think about her horse, Shimmer, now retired and grazing in the pasture of her grandparents’ North Carolina farm. And beside him stands Claudia – healthy, strong and happy – smiling that peaceful, knowing smile so many of us came to know and love.

Now that’s comfort food

Do you sometimes just crave tater tots? Then we’ve got a casserole for you. Anne Thomas, a recent UNC grad and rising PR superstar (who just happens to work for our firm), shared something special with us: her mom’s recipe for Tater Tot Casserole, which has been Anne’s fav since she was a tot herself. Since moving to ATL from NC, Anne makes this dish for her roomies and they all love it. Last week we road-tested it with Adrian D’Avanzo and it passed with flying, er, taters.
TATER TOT CASSEROLE
Ingredients:
2 lbs ground beef
1 green pepper
1 medium onion
Grated cheddar cheese (about 4 cups)
1 bag frozen tater tots (32 oz.)
1 can cream of mushroom soup
1 can cream of potato soup
Brown ground beef in skillet with chopped green pepper and chopped onion (adjust amount of green pepper and onion to taste). Drain grease. Place mixture in bottom of one very large, or two medium, casserole dishes. Sprinkle grated cheese on top. Layer thawed tater tots on top of cheese. Mix cream of mushroom soup with cream of potato soup in a bowl. Spread the mixture over tater tots. Cover with lots of grated cheese. Cook uncovered at 425F for approximately 30-45 minutes.

Aha!

A dear friend, Randy Siegel (who was also my boss for seven years), launched a new business this month, Your Internal GPS. Please check it out. Meanwhile, here’s an article reposted from Randy’s October e-newsletter. It’s so good, we just had to share. Have yourself a happy week!
Be Happy, Truly Happy
Do you ever read something and have a magical “aha moment”? Here’s one of mine.
Erich Fromm in To Have or To Be? describes a modern misconception. He writes that most of us spend our lives trying to:
Have enough (money, power, things) so that we can…
Do what we want in terms of work and how we spend our time, because then we can…
Be happy.
Unfortunately, most of us get stuck at the first step: we never “have enough.” As a result, we put living our lives on hold.
“Once I pay off the house, I will consider changing careers.”
“When the kids are grown, I’ll deal with my marriage.”
“When I retire, I will take up painting, golf or traveling.”
Fromm says that in order to have a rich life you need to invert the formula. First, you need to:
Be who you are. Know your strengths, weaknesses and your purpose. This self-awareness will lead you to….
Do what you love. When you use your unique strengths to be of service to others, you will be rewarded, and…
Be happy.  You’ll have what you need. That doesn’t mean you will have everything you want, but it does mean you will have what you need. Dick Leider says in The Power of Purpose, “There are two ways to be rich; one is to have more, the other is to want less.”
How can you invert the having, doing and being cycle? Stop making money your primary goal. Instead, follow your passion, heart and values. Stop measuring your success by your bank account. Measure your success by your happiness.
Happiness is a feeling that comes from inside; it cannot be bought. Sure, you can feel unhappy if you don’t have enough money to meet your basic needs, but after that, money will not make you happy. To be happy, do what you love to do and do it to be of service to others.
Aha!
