resting in peace

We’ve occasionally heard of an old burial site atop the big hill across the creek and searched for it a couple of times with no luck. But last weekend we spotted a new turnoff, up a steep wooded trail, and headed up there on horseback. At the top we came upon the old cemetery and stood there for a few minutes in hushed reverence. Some say this is the final resting place of Creek Indian Tribe members from around the 1700s-1800s, while others believe these to be the gravestones of early white settlers. There used to be 25 or more grave markers here, according to one source, but many have been lost over the years. Today, only about six headstones remain. We will visit this place again to pay our respects.
